Avocado varieties

Profiles of the avocado varieties grown across Kenya — tree and fruit characteristics, flowering and pollination, yield and harvest, climate needs, pests and diseases, and market use — alongside where each variety is recorded on farms.

Planning for pollination

Avocado flowers open twice, first as female and then as male, on a fixed daily rhythm. Type A and Type B varieties are out of step with each other, so planting one of each close together lets them pollinate one another and generally improves fruit set.
